Our New Production Board

Here it is, the Keane Production Board version 0.5.

For those of you who've been to our office you've probably seen the huge "do-it-yourself" poetry canvases we have. For this next evolution we decided to cannibalize one of the pieces seeing it was already a large space hanging on the wall.

With the first attempt, version 0.25, we simply used white duck tape to mark off the areas (7-8 second mark in the video) but the acrylic paint was Post-It resistant and they kept falling off. We found that they stuck great to the white tape and with that discovery in mind, we went to town covering the entire surface. An added plus of the duck tape is that it's dry erase friendly.

The board now has three main areas, a "Backburner" area to capture ideas on the left, a "This Week" area where each Keane member has a row to sort out their tasks for the week (loosely organized by client) and a "Completed" area on the far right for everything accomplished that week.

The proposed flow we're considering is:

  • Tasks are captured individually on Post-Its and placed in the left Backburner area somewhat aligned by the name of who's responsible.
  • Every Monday each person places tasks their going to accomplish in the main "This Week" area. Larger client's tasks can be aligned in columns.
  • As tasks are accomplished their moved off to the right side into the "Completed" area (for bragging rights).

We picked up some colored tabs for additional visual messaging:

  • Pink Tabs on a task are elevated to a "You need to get this finished today or ELSE" level.
  • Blue Tabs on a task are tasks that someone else creates that they need you to complete so they can move forward on a project (Example: Write copy, gather logo assets from client).
  • Green Tabs on a task are added to completed tasks and moved into other people's area when ready for review.

And the black strips are actually magnetic for added yet-to-be-determined functionality.

Supplies used:

  • Stretched canvas art board
  • Three rolls of white duck tape
  • Four rolls of magnetic tape
  • OfficeMax Self-Stick Pop-ups (AKA Post-Its)
  • Post-It Tabs
  • White Erase marker

At the moment we're all busy generating tasks but we anticipate the whole production system to kick off next week and will report back here on how it goes!

Keane's Project Management System Overhaul

A few weeks ago I decided to start exploring new project management systems, namely real tangible ones versus an online Basecamp-esque system. In case you missed it, here's a link to the original post: http://keane24.com/new-project-management-system-inspired-by-for

Here's my critique so far:

Pros: Easy to see tasks, centrally located

Cons: Only built for one person (me), no real system, not organized enough

This week I've started drafting up plans for the next version (sketches above) and have a lot of great ideas, I'll post up photos as soon as it's complete.

Found: 4th of July Party, only 5 Yollars

I was at Revolver Records this weekend with Diana, perusing the vinyl as they were taking away stacks upon stacks of inventory to their new location on 2nd/Roosevelt. Found an original 1997 pressing of Godspeed You Black Emperor's f#a# album, which was only limited to 500 copies and includes a penny flattened by a train among its other awesome inserts. A treasure indeed.

Anyway. As I was leaving I spied another gem, this one tacked up on the corkboard near the door – an open invitation to a 4th of July party at Bike Saviours, a bicycle co-op in the fixed-gear heart of Tempe. Thought the little note was too cute to keep to myself. I mean, the cost is only 5 yollars and, while there are no smoke bombs or other fireworks allowed, you'll be able to see some awesomely-named bands spit fireballs and emit spark showers:

  • Haiku Ambulance
  • Pigeon Religion
  • Ovariesy
  • Soft Shoulder
  • Hell-Kite
Go.

New Case Study - Downtown Tempe Brand Rehab

Downtown Tempe Community: Brand Rehab

In early January 2009, Keane was contracted by Downtown Tempe Community (DTC) to help solve a major problem: over the course of 15+ years, the once-vibrant downtown area known as the Mill Avenue District had gradually wandered astray of its roots in independent culture and unscripted urban spirit. And they wanted to get it back.

Services provided: Comprehensive brand rehabilitation, including various methods of primary/secondary research, audience redefinition, repositioning strategy, development of core brand principles, tactical/strategic recommendations for public reintroduction.

New Client Work - SunCor Project Book

Before 5pm hits on a Friday, here are some shots of this beautiful book we designed/produced for SunCor, that we just received yesterday. It's always exciting to see the final piece and we couldn't be happier.

(Don't worry, for all you print-a-philes, you can expect Russ Maloney to flesh out this project in excruciating detail here in the coming week!)

Keane Prevails at the 1st Agency Throwdown

Beating Forty 1505 to 1212 in the first ever Agency Throwdown was a good time, but getting everyone together outside of another meetup was even better. We were too busy bowling to get tons of footage (the losing team has lots) but here are some photos from the evening.

With the newly formed Agency Throwdown rules, Winner Stays and makes the challenge, so our next victim? Sarkissian Mason

You're on notice SM - you pick the date and alley and we'll be there.

On Tuesday Forty released a video attempting to lay the smack down on us:

So, without question we decided to do a little bit of video work ourselves as somewhat of a video-smack talk reply:

Come out tonight and root for your favorite agency. If you need help deciding, here's a recent score from one of our teammates:

[Editors note - This was also made in about a day in case you were wondering]

Impressive Free Social Media Guide

We sometimes get a little sick with all the "social media guides" that are out there, just about had a heart attack when the Social Media Bible came out, but this guide developed by 360i is robust, to the point and for the most part without fluff. Certainly check it out if you're having a hard time wrapping your head around everything.

New Client Work - FirstStrategic Before and After

FirstStrategic, a leading public policy firm in Arizona approached Keane a few months ago to assist with their new name and brand. Changing from HGDR to FirstStrategic and armed only with a logo and font choice we developed the new aggressive look and feel managing everything from the company photography to the final layout and development of the website.
